A self-taught artist, Jim Pennington spent his formative years studying and copying masterworks in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, The Art Institute of Boston, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.
Dedicated study of 19th century masterworks by Sargent, Zorn, Chase, Whistler, Cortes, and Degas as well as the chiaroscuro and sfumato effects used by Italian masters gave him a solid foundation upon which to build and experiment.
Pennington’s masterfully executed canvases bring to mind the timeless works of his mentors while exploring the beauty found in quiet moments of contemporary life.
